Are you ready?
When it comes to managing projects, we’ve picked up a thing or two over the years. So, what should you expect when you hire us?
What follows is a brief summary of the life of a project here at Hellow Yellow.
It all starts when we get that first call or email from you. We are very friendly and approachable, and no question or idea is dismissed out-of-hand. Feel free to get in touch even if you just have an idea you want to talk about.
In the end we like helping people with our experience. Even if you think we might not be for you, we’ll be happy to recommend other reputable companies and people in the industry who might be exactly what you’re after.
2 Initial proposal & guideline prices
Chances are we’ve previously built a website or have done a project similar to what you’re after and we’ll be able to use that as a guide in order to put together an initial proposal and rough estimate. We’ll then present that proposal in person (for most cases) and walk you through all the project details and pricing to make sure we’re all on the same page. At this stage we’ll identify the results you are looking to achieve and discuss how your website / project will deliver them.
It’s not just about prices though: we like to meet up at this stage so you can get a feel for our company. It’s important that we’re the right fit for each other. We think we’re pretty flexible as we’ve worked with one-man-bands and small businesses, all the way up to corporations.
We will produce provisional designs to convey the general look and feel for your project. Often there are a number of rounds of feedback and tweaks before the design is signed-off. Where possible we’ll collect any content and collateral for your project while the design is being finalized.
For iOS applications and more complex projects, rather than spend a lot of time and effort writing long-winded specification documents, we tend to produce a ‘wireframe/design’ prototype to identify the key features and how they will fit together.
For websites we typically design the home page only for review. We will use those homepage designs as a style guide that can be applied consistently throughout the site, and will adapt the page layouts to fit the content.
4 Development phase
For websites a lot more happens in this phase than other projects. So we only listed the important parts for websites here.
We like to take control of existing website hosting and domains and, more often than not, move them to our own hosting for better quality control. This ensures all server side settings that need to be configured for your new site will work properly and we take care of any updating for the life of your Hellow Yellow membership.
We work with open source server-side technologies including PHP, MySQL and others.
We use DreamHost to ensure our websites always have the best site speeds and technologies available. Why don’t we have our own servers you ask? Well, it’s kind of like the old phrase don’t put all your eggs in one basket. By using an outside company dedicated to web hosting, they have servers all over the world so when a natural disaster happens in one area it doesn’t mean your website goes down. We took our time finding a hosting partner with exactly what we wanted so you can trust when we offer a website plug in or program it will work. We can’t say the same for other guys.
We use open-source CMS software to run all of our websites. We have experience in using WordPress, Drupal and Joomla and will pick the best CMS for your project. Using open-source means they are constantly updated and monitored by groups of people dedicated to the development and security of that CMS.
5 Testing, feedback & amendments
Once we have an initial implementation to show you we will make it available for you to test online before it is visible to the public. We’ll ask for your feedback at regular intervals so that we can make any changes and amends before too much time and effort has been invested.
The website (or application) is finished and ready to go live — All that remains is to hit the button!
7 Review, analyse & improve
All websites have maintenance after launch we will monitor your website, fix any bugs and make the inevitable tweaks and changes you require during your membership period. We will also monitor your site’s performance on search engine results pages and Google Analytics.
